The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources will celebrate the World Wetlands Day on Thursday.
The day is celebrated annually on 2nd February to commemorate the signing of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands that advocates for wise use of wetlands.
The event will be presided over the the Cabinet Secretary Prof Judi Wakhungu.
This year’s theme for World Wetlands Day 2017 is “Wetlands for Disaster Risk Reduction.”
The new theme has been chosen to emphasize the importance of these ecosystems as a natural, effective and less costly solution taken to reduce disaster risk and the effects of climate change.
Wetlands act as a natural sponge, absorbing and storing excess rainfall and reducing flooding. During the dry season, they release the stored water, delaying the onset of droughts and reducing water shortages.
