Kenya is likely to start teaching all pupils sign language immediately the new curriculum is rolled out.
According to the new curriculum, parents could also end up being taught the language also.
“Sign language to be considered as a language to be taught to all learners. There is also need for parents to be assisted to learn sign language for ease of communication with their hearing-impaired children,” reads part of the media briefing spelling out the new structure.
According to the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), teachers will first be taught the subject matter and given the logistical know-how on its implementation.
A pilot phase for the curriculum will be carried out in selected 470 schools across the country.
