[Photo|Courtesy]Foreign Affairs minister Amina Mohamed has told the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to consolidate UNEP's headquarter functions in Nairobi.Speaking at UN headquarters in New York on Saturday, Mohamed cited universal membership and efforts to enhance financing and UNEP's ability to fulfill its unique coordination mandate within the United National system.The Cabinet Secretary also commended the UN for measures taken so far to strengthen and upgrade UNEP to enable it to respond to environmental challenges."Kenya insists on the implementation of the decision by heads of state, now enshrined in the Rio Declaration, to consolidate headquarter functions of UNEP in Nairobi," Mohamed said during the 72nd Session of UNGA, where she represented President Uhuru Kenyatta.She added: "This matter is of grave concern and continues not to receive the attention it deserves. The importance of having UNEP in Kenya, in the global south, cannot also be over-emphasised."On climate change, Mohammed noted that it was disrupting the livelihoods of millions of people and called for firm environmental conservation actions as outlined in the Paris climate agreement.She added that the planet's capacity to sustain life is under threat.The CS urged developed countries to extend financial, technological and capacity building support to enable developing countries transition to low-carbon development.
