President Uhuru Kenyatta has hit out at Opposition leader Raila Odinga over his decision to boycott the October 26 repeat election.

Speaking at a rally in Kajiado, the president said that Raila was not more important than the country.

He said that even without Raila the country was going to move ahead, adding that he would not lower himself to pleasing and satisfying the needs of one individual at the expense of Kenya.

"Tukisonga mbele anaturudisha nyuma, ati Kenya hii haiwezi endelea bila yeye. My friend Kenya is not about an individual but 45 million people," Uhuru said.

Loosely translated to: "Every time we try to move ahead, he takes us back. He says Kenya cannot progress without him."

He added: "My friend, it is not about satisfying your ego, it is not about satisfying your dream. Kama ameamua ya kwamba hautashugulika kwa uchaguzi (if you have decided not to participate in the election), we cannot continue to hold Kenya in suspense."
