Joseph “Joe” Masiga commonly known as JJ Masiga is one of the greatest footballers Kenya has ever produced. He played for AFC Leopards in the early 80s but that was after switching from rugby where he plied his trade for Mean Machine and the national rugby team.
John Anzrah (Football to athletics)
Most Kenyans know him for his recent misfortunes rather than his past heroics as he is the sprints coach who was sent home from the 2016 Rio Games for allegedly using an athlete’s accreditation to access the Olympics Village for a meal. But before he became a coach, Anzrah was a sprinter who represented Kenya in various global events before his retirement.
What most people don’t know, however, is that Anzrah was a renowned footballer who plied his trade with Abaluhya FC (now AFC Leopards) and Posta in the 70s. He switched to athletics on the advice of a friend, Allan Thigo, who had noticed his sprinting prowess in football matches.
Carl Tundo (Golf to motorsport)
Rally driver Carl “Flash” Tundo, the first Kenyan winner of an IRC round is a four-time Safari Rally champion and a member of the Rift Valley Motor & Sports Club. Although has been on and off the rallying scene since 2012, he began his active motorsport career in 2002. Unbeknown to many, he is also a golfer who has represented Kenya in international tournaments like the Johnnie Walker Classic International Pro-Am tournament.
Nicholas Bett (Volleyball to athletics)
Bett’s switch to track and field proved a success as he claimed a gold medal in the 400m hurdles during the 2015 World Championships in Beijing. He was favorite to clinch gold in the 2016 Rio Olympics but a blunder in the preliminary round saw him eliminated.
Before joining the track, however, he was destined for a great career in volleyball where he represented Kapsabet High School in various competitions.
Haron Koech (Volleyball to football)
The elder brother of Nicholas Bett, Haron Koech was a promising volleyball player as a youngster in high school until his parents convinced him to make the switch to an individual track sport. Like his bother, he picked 400m hurdles where he has gone on to represent the country in different competitions including the finals in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
