A latest report by the Bloggers Association of Kenya (BAKE) indicates that than 60 bloggers have been arrested in 2016.
Tittled 'State of the Internet in Kenya 2016', the report also shows an increased number of people reading blogs countrywide, with monthly blog readership increasing by 46 per cent from 12.4 million to 18.1 million.
Blogs touching on the lifestyle category recorded the highest increase in readership by 69 per cent, followed by business blogs by 46 per cent and creative writing by 36 per cent.
Readership of political blogs dropped to 47 per cent, while readership of entertainment blogs dropped 37 per cent, according to the report.
Speaking during the launch of the report, BAKE chairman Kennedy Kachwanya said police and senior state officials have constantly been looking for ways to intimidate bloggers and social media users in the Country.
"The arrest of bloggers and journalists over remarks made on social media or blogs is a way of muzzling their freedom of expression on-line. Those arrested are usually slapped with dubious charges or locked up in police cells during weekends, which is unlawful,'' Kachwanya said, Wednesday.
