The decision by Kenyan-born Australian Senator Lucy Gichuhi to pay back Sh160, 000 she used to fly two relatives for her 50th birthday has thrilled the nation.

The South Australia senator used $2139 to fly two relatives for her birthday celebrations in Adelaide Australia.

But following the media reports, Ms. Gichuhi termed the incident as administrative error and agreed to pay back the funds.

"Regarding the media reports about my travel expenses, this was an administrative error involving misunderstanding of travel rules," she tweeted adding that she had already returned the money.

And on his a local WhatsApp group, Nyamira senator Okong'o Mogeni lauded the move adding that Kenya should benchmark the level of accountability in Australia over fight against graft.

"When the senator admits mistakes such as Gichuhi, I think as a country we should just emulate her. That is the only way we can successfully fight graft," he said.

In 2017, Ms. Gichuhi won the South Australian seat becoming the first senator of African descent in the senate.
