Lucy Gichuhi, a Kenyan-born lawyer, has gone into the books of history after she was elected a senator in Australia.

Gichuhu hit the headlines on Thursday when she trounced other aspirants born in Australia to clinch the seat with an impressive margin.

The newly elected senator, who migrated to Australia in 1999, has become an inspiration to Kenyans living in the diaspora as well as those within the nation.

Gichuhu joins the likes of the former United States of America President Hussein Barack Obama who defied all odds to rise to power in foreign nations despite having Kenyan roots.

“I am honoured and grateful for this opportunity to serve Australia. I see it as an opportunity to give back to this great nation,” she said in a statement released to Media houses.

The newly elected leaders also said that she deserves the win, adding that she is an Australian-Kenyan because of dual citizenship.

“I do not intend on commenting on the processes that have brought us to this point. As a lawyer, I am deeply respectful of both the legal and electoral processes. I am an Australian citizen and am eligible to serve. I will continue to take advice on all of these matters as we move forward,” she added.
