Kenyan-born defender Philip Mwene could be on the brink of making history should his planned move to Bundesliga side FSV Mainz 05 sail through.
Born to a Kenyan father and an Austrian mother, Mwene who has been featuring for second-tier side FC Kaiserslautern which was however relegated to the third tier is reported to be on his way to the Bundesliga side if reports by German news outlet Bild is anything to go by.
The outlet revealed on Wednesday that the 24-year-old is set to be the first signing for Mainz 05 FC ahead of the 2018-2019 season subject to a medical test before the end of the week after which he is set to sign a long-term deal with the German outfit.
The right-back is understood to have attracted the interest of the Bundesliga side following the relegation of his current side Kaiserslautern which triggered a free transfer clause on his contract.
Although he is yet to earn a call-up from Harambee Stars, Mwene is nonetheless eligible to don the Kenyan flags since he is yet to feature for the Austrian national team.
The versatile defender who however has spent most of his life in Austria scored 3 goals and registered six assists in the 33 matches he featured for Kaiserslautern during the just ended 2017/2018 season.
