A Kenyan has petitioned both National and Senate Assemblies to pass the Two-thirds Gender Bill before the two Houses are dissolved in preparation for the August 2017 polls, or be declared unfit to operate.
Through Justice and Legal Affairs Committee chairman Samuel Chepkonga, Wilbert Kipsang Choge is seeking declaratory orders that Parliament has failed to comply with the Gender Amendment Bill.
Chepkonga presented the petition before the National Assembly Wednesday evening and warned that the two Houses risk disbandment if House Speakers fail to act on the matter.
The Ainabkoi MP said MPs risk going home without salaries for the next one year if the Bill is not passed.
"If you are thinking to earn salaries in the next one year, also think of going home without salaries if you don't pass the Gender Bill. Including the women MPs," Chepkonga told the House.
He said this is because the House will be operating without the required gender representation, contrary to the Constitution.
Parliament has failed to gather enough support for the approval of the Gender Bill thrice, a move that gives any Kenyan the right to move to Court and seek for the disbandment of the August House.
