Environment Cabinet Secretary Judy Wakhungu’s mother Grace Sarapay Wakhungu spent a night at the Langata Women’s Prisons after failing to raise a one million shilling surety bond.
The bond was awarded to her by the deputy registrar after she was arraigned in court over 10 million shilling bank loan.
Wakhungu was arrested at on Wednesday afternoon August 17, 2016 in Westlands. She was attending a wedding and she was nabbed after an arrest warrant against her was issued earlier.
She was put to task to explain why she should not be jailed for failing to settle the bank debt when she appeared before the deputy registrar’s Commercial Court in Milimani.
Wakhungu had the case filed against her in 2014 by the Middle East Bank Kenya Limited. The bank is seeking the court to compel her to pay the debt after complaining that she has been stubborn and never shown interest to pay.
The court directed her to settle the debt in a week or be committed to a civil jail.
Wakhungu's case will be mentioned on August 24, 2016.
