A single mother from Kenya has been crowned as the best taxi driver in Dubai.

Peris Wangechi who hails from Mukurwe-ini in Nyeri County beat hundreds of other drivers in the male dominated field in the United Arab Emirates to come out the winner.

Miss Wangechi who has been a taxi driver for the last six years is the only Kenyan to have taken home the annual award issued by the Dubai police for exceptional performance and conduct.

The Dubai police department rewards taxi drivers annually with certificates and monetary gifts on the basis of zero accidents, zero traffic offenses and zero black points on their driving licence, she said;

"I have been in Dubai exactly 10 years now. I worked in a security company for four years. After I got the driving licence, I joined Dubai taxi and this is my sixth year," she said in an interview

Despite her success, Wangechi admits that the job comes with its challenges one of them being having to wear the hijab as a sign of respect regardless of her christian faith.
