Prof Herman Manyora. He says he does not believe much in opinion polls for politics. [Photo: citizentv.co.ke]The only credible thing that pollsters can do in Kenya is market research and other stuff but not political opinion polls.Political analyst Prof Harman Manyora has said that Kenya is 'country of thieves and political con men and therefore, one cannot rule out some people massaging the figures in other people's thinking.'Speaking to Citizen TV's Game Plan on Sunday, Manyora said that the reason why Kenya cannot have serious opinion polling is because of the culture in which the polls take place."Look for instance at the language barrier. You cannot quite reach the respondent well because of the language barrier. It is a mess. Another thing is that the country has only had one demographic, tribe. So, you cannot have serious opinion polls that give you the real picture of where we are like we have in the US," said Manyora.Manyora asserted that opinion polls in Kenya are not helpful at this stage of 'our democracy' till a time when the demographics will change and be a true representation of the society 'that we live in'."Till a time that we will have demographics like the educated male, educated women, male not educated, and such other serious demographics then opinion polls in Kenya will never give you a true picture of where a political discourse is headed to," Manyora added.
