More than half of Kenyan youths spend about Sh5,000 a month to place their gambling bets through their phones, a survey has revealed.
According to the survey conducted by GeoPoll, 76 per cent of Kenyan youths gamble using football matches, a slightly higher figure compared to 57 per cent of youths in Uganda.
“A majority have never won any amount above Sh5,000. Youth elsewhere spend less than $50 (Sh5,0000 ) per month and bet only once a month,” read the report in part.
The survey also reported that Ghana had the lowest rate of gambling youths at 42 per cent.
This study focused on five countries in the sub-Saharan Africa namely Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa.
It sampled out a total of 3,879 respondents in the poll conducted last Monday.
“Among the most popular gambling options, football betting reigns in all countries except in South Africa. Kenyan youths bet the most with 79 per cent of bets placed on football matches. In South Africa, lotteries are preferred to football, casino, racing and poker,” added the report.
It also showed that gambling was becoming popular among African men owing to their high attraction to sports and the proliferation of their respective local sports betting players.
