Following the appellate court upholding an earlier ruling to nullify Mohamed Abdi Mohamud’s gubernatorial win in August 8 election, Kenyans were quick to get to social media to give their reactions on the same.
But interestingly and yet sad, most Kenyans were confusing between Wajir county and Garissa county.
What struck me the most is that a majority of the Kenyans would not differentiate between Garissa and Wajir counties with a majority of Kenyans either thinking it was the same place or confusing the governors and leaders of the two counties.
Here are common facts you need to know about the two counties.
The two are different counties and separated by a distance of 249 kilometres equivalent to 155 miles which is almost a 3 hours ride.
Garissa Governor is Ali Korane while the county Boss of Wajir is Mohamed Abdi Mohamud whose petition to nullify an earlier ruling denying him the governor’s seat was upheld by the appellate court.
Wajir Senator is Abdullahi Ibrahim Ali while Garissa Senator is Mohamed Yufuf Haji.
A majority of the inhabitants of Garissa and Wajir are the ethnic Somali according to the 2009 census but the majority being the Degoodi in Wajir while Garissa is the Darod.
National Assembly Majority leader Aden Duale is the MP of Garissa Township constituency and not Wajir or Garissa as most people confuse.
Both counties are in the Northern part of the country.
