The government has moved to diversify transportation of imported white maize to ease the biting shortage.
Agriculture CS Willy Bett has attributed the unga shortage in the country to a decision by Kenyans to start consuming more of ugali and less of other foods.
He said that despite the government subsidising prices of unga, many Kenyans are still missing out on the product because more and more people have flocked supermarkets seeking the same commodity.
“Since we started the subsidised programme, we have witnessed more Kenyans preferring unga, thus the high demand for maize flour,” he said.
Bett however said that cheaper transportation put in place by the government will ensure maize imports reach to the millers immediately after docking at Mombasa. He said this when he witnessed the arrival of 12,000 more bags via the Rift Valley Railways on Monday.
“To ensure every Kenyan enjoys the Sh90 subsidised maize flour, all maize from Mombasa will be moved using SGR, RVR and trucks,” Bett said.
