A new report has revealed that Kenyan civilians are five times more exposed to police officers gun shots than by armed criminals including Al-shabaab terrorists.
According to the report, the country's police force, uniformed officers shot close to 70 percent of the 1,868 individuals who died from gun shots in Kenya during the last five years.
The second deadliest perpetrators are armed robbers, who were found to have perpetrated only 14 percent of the reported deaths.
Of the 1,868 Kenyan citizens who died from bullet wounds between the year 2009 and 2013, 67 percent were killed by a uniformed police officer. This proportion, however, changed a little during the five years that the researchers conducted the study.
For 63 percent of these deaths, the police failed to report finer details of the circumstances that led to the shooting. Not a single reason was given as to why the responsible officers opened fire in the cases.
It further added that police officers often conducted gun for hire schemes where they loaned out their guns to criminals.
