Kenyan football fans on social media platforms elicited mixed reactions following Real Madrids big announcement that current Spain National team head coach Julen Lopetegui will become their next head coach after the world cup.
Real Madrid enjoys a wide fan base in Kenya with many supporting the club due to the ever-presence of superstar hitman Cristiano Ronaldo who formerly played in the English Premier League side Manchester United.
The 51-year-old will take over from triple Champions League winner Zinedine Zidane who resigned just five days after lifting the club’s 13th Champions League trophy in May.
Current Tottenham Hotspurs manager Mauricio Pochetino was in the running to take over from the former France international but it looks like the Los Blancos fancy Lopetegui who has had an understanding of Spanish football.
Lopetegui has been in charge of Real Madrid’s B team and reserves in the past as well as featuring on one occasion for the Spanish Giants.
The former Spain international has also managed the likes of Porto in the past.
Before taking up the Spain job, Lopetegui nearly became coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers after the English club had offered him a tempting contract as well as an amazing wage packet.
“Julen Lopetegui will be the coach of Real Madrid after the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Real Madrid announces that Julen Lopetegui will coach the first team for the next three seasons,” Real Madrid’s official club statement read.
It remains to be seen how well he handles the star studded team with many regarding it as the best side for the past century.
Regardless of Spain’s performance at the world cup, Lopetegui will be under pressure to deliver and try to match the exploits of his predecessor.
