Due to the reduced production of sugar, many shoppers have been disappointed after realising they could not purchase it at their supermarkets of choice.

In the Central Business District, Nairobi,  several supermarkets have experienced a rapid shortage making most consumers to walk away.

Nakumatt Lifestyle and Uchumi supermarket along Monrovia Street had no sugar for the better part of the weekend. Customers had to stare at empty shelves. The management of the supermarkets had to stock other commodities in the empty shelves.

"The demand is higher than the supply, that is why we ran out of stocks," said one of the attendants at Nakumatt Lifestyle.

In other supermarkets like Tuskys, sugar was available in one and two kilogramme packets only but local brands were not available.

Customers who came across this quickly picked the available packets with the fear of not knowing whether there will be more sugar in the future.

"I  just learnt about the shortage, I will buy the available brand just to be safe," said Ms Elizabeth Kibet.
