The government has extended subsidized maize flour until there are sufficient stocks of the commodity, the Agriculture Cs Willy Better has said.
According to Bett the programme will be extended beyond September as earlier planned due to ongoing heavy rains that has hampered maize harvest in the North Rift region.
“North Rift is experiencing heavy rains which have delayed harvest of maize from the shambas,” he said.
He said new maize stocks from the North Rift region will now land in the market towards end of October.“Th government desires that subsidized maize flour remains until sufficient maize hits the market to sustain lower prices,” added Bett. He, however, noted that duty waiver on maize imports will not be extended since the current orders are enough to last until the next harvest.
Currently subsidized maize flour, a 2kg packet retails at Sh90 and 1kg goes at Sh47.
