Kenyans are once again likely to be asked to keep up with the high cost of living with the prices of maize flour expected to go up in January 2018.

In an interview with the Business Daily, a miller said that the maize subsidy ends on Sunday and that they will be forced to come up with measures to ensure that they cover for the high cost since they are currently buying a 90kg bag at Sh3000 up from Sh2300.

“The supply from the government has been very limited and we have to mill what we are procuring from farmers and traders at a higher cost,” the miller who requested anonymity for fear of government reprisal said as quoted by The Business Daily.

He said that there is no other option but will be forced to raise the price from the current S9h0 to up to Sh110 per 2kg pack thus increasing pressure on inflation which had dropped in the month of November.

“Obviously flour cost will go above the current subsidy price,” the miller added. In May, the government announced a Sh.6billion subsidy on maize imports which helped lower the price of the commodity which had hit a record high.
