Kenyans are expected to start using notes and coins without the portraits of Mzee Kenyatta and Moi next year. The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) Governor Patrick Njoroge on Friday confirmed that the CBK has begun the process of designing and printing of the notes and coins which will no longer bear the portraits of the two former presidents. The CBK boss said the new currencies will be issued as from the second quarter of 2018.“We expect to issue new generation currency sometime in the second quarter of 2018,” said Njoroge. The move is in accordance with the 2010 constitution that prohibits the use of images or portraits of individuals on the Kenyan currency and instead stipulates that the currencies should bear images that depict national unity. Last week, De La Rue, a firm that prints Kenyan currency filed a petition at the High Court challenging a move by the CBK to block them the multi-billion tender. However, the court on Friday cleared the tender process giving way for the printing of the new currency.
