The move saw the hashtag #Kenya @51 trend for hours as Kenyans followed on the Jamhuri Day celebrations online.

While people praised the achievements of the government 51 years since Kenya became a republic, others vented their frustrations especially on security matters as they followed the ceremony held at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

Osman M Osman tweeted, “I wish these jets would have been used to kill Alshabab militants in Mandera.”

He was supported by Opil@Antopil who wrote,’’Military parade at Jamhuri Day celebrations, in light of security…Ironic.”

However, some such as businessman Dr Chris Kirubi urged Kenyans to pray for leaders and peace in the country.

Most Kenyans called for patriotism and reprimanded their colleagues for focusing on the negative aspects of marking the celebrations.

“For our nation to realize its development goals and combat security real patriots of our country have to stand out and be positive,” tweeted Jeff Mwanza.

Others took the opportunity to share why they were proud to be Kenyan as the country turned 51.

Njiru Mwenda praised the Kenya Defence Forces with his tweet, “KDF, we appreciate you so much. You risk your lives to save other Kenyans.”

Of the many who tweeted , the best representation of the #Kenya @51 arguably came from the  popular boy band Sauti sol.
