According to the National Council for Population and Development (NCPD) North Rift regional coordinator Moses Ouma, family planning is a sure way to to help manage population by enabling mothers and couples to properly space their birth.

"Statistics show that Uasin Gishu County is a youthful population, 42% are 15 years and below, 55.7% are 15-64 years while 65 years is 3% of the population. This shows that almost half of the total population is economically unproductive leading to high dependency ratio," he said.

Speaking to journalists in Eldoret town on Saturday, Ouma urged the national and county governments to invest heavily in family planning methods to manage population.

“County governments should allocate funds to sponsor family planning and development campaigns in the country,” noted Ouma.

He reiterated there was need for concerted efforts by all stakeholders to formulate policies aimed at educating and sensitizing the public on the importance and methods of birth control control.

“The current birth rate in Uasin Gishu County is five children per mother,  this calls for more awareness and sensitisation on the need for Kenyans to take family planning seriously,” said Ouma.
