[Photo: Elvanis Ronoh]Young Environmentalist Lily Tanui Moimet has urged Kenyans to plant bamboo trees.She said the trees they are faster in growth, prevent soil erosion, protect the environment and water catchment areas."I want to urge Kenyans to plant bamboos trees since it is the remedy to mudslide because they long roots, making it easy to absorb water thus preventing mudslides," she said in Ngeria, Thursday."This will also help to increase the forest cover from the current 7 percent to 10 percent and this can only be achieved by every one involving himself in planting trees. Deforestation has led to unpredictable weather patterns," she added. She, however, revealed that she has started a campaign that will sensitize each household to plant at least one tree."It is sad that Kenya has 7 percent forest cover compared to Finland which has 75 percent.If 45 million Kenyans plant at least one tree we will have 45 percent forest cover," noted Moimet.Lily Tanui Moimet 17 years old is a Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS) alumnus who is passionate about environmental and she currently scored A- in the just-released KCSE and wants to pursue environmental science.Is there a newsworthy accident, incident or event happening in Uasin Gishu County that you want Hivisasa to cover?
