Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Water Simon Chilugui has urged Kenyans to ensure they protect water catchment areas in a bid to protect the great river Nile from drying.
Speaking during the 12th National Celebration of Nile Day at Tendere stadium in Kisii County, the CS said Kenya and counties surrounding Lake Victoria have a responsibility to protect the resources.
He said the ministry’s assessment had shown that 60 percent of national clean water coverage was complete and the remaining 40 percent would be accomplished soon.
He, however, promised to increase water per household connectivity in Kisii County which has in the recent past experienced depletion of major water reservoir resulting in prolonged drought.
The newly appointed CS assured Kisii governor James Ongwae that the connectivity will be done by March 2019 through the Lake Victoria South Basin Company which is undertaking the works.
His sentiments were echoed by Kisii County Commissioner Godfrey Kigochi who said that it is upon Kisii residents and Kenyans, in general, to help to salvage water sources in the country in an effort to protect water catchment areas.
Kisii County governor James Ongwae urged locals to shun planting Bluegum trees which are characterized by depleting of water resources as they amass a lot of water from the ground.
