Kenya is now part of a noble cause involving 40 countries that aims at cleaning the world seas and oceans.

The initiative is being pursued under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Clean Seas Campaign.

Other countries that lie along coastal lines involved in the cause include Indonesia, Brazil, and Canada.

One of the huge goals of the campaign is to rid seas and oceans of plastics that have been endangering marine life.

Kenya has led the charge against plastics by introducing a ban on plastic carrier bags that had been a huge part of life in the country.

Kenya's involvement will further strengthen the country's reputation and global standing as a reliable partner in the efforts aimed at preserving the environment for posterity.

''Every year tonnes of polythene bags and other waste is collected from oceans, especially during coastal clean-up days.'' Prof. Judy Wakhungu, the Environment cabinet secretary, said during a presentation at the United Nations Environmental Programme headquarters.
