Kenya Harlequins player Frank Wanyama has been suspended by his club pending investigations by both the Kenya Rugby Union and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions over rape allegations labelled on his and another rugby player.
Musician Wendy Kemunto made the allegations on her Instagram page, where she alleged that the Kenya Sevens contracted Wanyama was one of two rugby players who raped her during her birthday in February.
On a separate statement, the Kenya Rugby Union said it had received the reports and will be reviewing the issue, which is under investigations by the police.
Wanyama was one of the team members when they recently won the Victoria 7s in Zimbabwe.
“We as a club frown upon any matters that relate to harassment in any form. However, we will not go crucify anyone on social media, we have left the matter to the police and other security personnel handling the issue,” said Harlequins chairman Mike Lucas.
The matter has raised uproar on social media, with many calling for the prosecution of the two offenders.
