Machakos County has received Sh800 million from the national government to upgrade Kenyatta Stadium.
The stadium is being prepared in readiness for the 2018 African Nations Championship.
The upgrade officially began on Tuesday.
"We have limited time to do this but we are confident we will make it. The money will be enough to face-lift this facility to international standards as required by the Confederation of African Football (CAF)," said Machakos governor Alfred Mutua .
CAF inspectors are expected in the country next month to inspect the project.
Kenyatta Stadium is among the five stadia set to host CAF among Nyayo Stadium, Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani, Eldoret's Kipchoge Keino and Meru's Kinoru Stadium.
