This aims to to pave way for IAAF to upgrade the hostels into five star hotel standards and accommodate the participants of the World Under 18 Championships athletes, according to Acting Vice Chancellor, Paul Wainaina.

The government used an extra Sh600 million to refurbish the institutions' hostels to be used as athletes’ village for the championships, due July 12-16 this year.

The move was in line with efforts by IAAF to turn Kenyatta University into a High Performance Training Centre (HPTC) as part of a legacy of the World Under-18 Championships.

Whereas the hostels are being refurbished into fully-fledged ultra-modern village, the students who were displaced in December have not yet settled.

They have been forced to spend nights at their friends rooms which are too small to host more than six people while searching for accommodation in the neighborhood towns such as Ruiru, Kahawa Wendani, Githurai and Kimbo.

Students who had been assured accommodation in Nyayo hostels were compensated Sh21,000 each, to enable them reside in private rental hostels within Kahawa and K.M.

They however said the money was not enough.
