Seven Kenyatta University students were on Thursday released on bond by a Kiambu Court in a case where they are being charged with damaging property.
The seven are David Amisi, David Morara, Dominic Orwa, Eric Mutuku, George Nguru, Trevor Agoi and Victor Wafula.
They were arraigned in court on suspicion of being involved in an arson attack at the institution in November last year.
They, however, denied the charges before the court and filed an application to be released on bail pending the next case hearing.
Kiambu principal magistrate Stella Atambo granted their application and ordered that they are released on a Sh500,000 cash bail or Sh1 million bond each.
The accused persons through their lawyers Kennedy Murunga and Ochieng Oyiek, however, asked the court to review the release terms saying the students are from humble backgrounds as the bail was too high and they don’t have jobs.
In the case, the seven accused persons were facing charges of allegedly burning down the institution’s administration block valued at more than Sh84 million.
In November, there was a protest at the institution as a result of a dispute related to the students’ election and an administration block was burnt and a gate destroyed.
The case will be mentioned on February 2.Is there a newsworthy accident, incident or event happening in Kiambu that you want Hivisasa to cover? Tell us what is happening by joining this group and have it published.
