Kenyatta University is determined to provide first class health care to Kenyans and also children, by building a public hospital and a children’s referral hospital in the institution
This was revealed by the institution’s Vice Chancellor Prof Olive Mugenda on Wednesday during an interview with journalists.
She said that they have collaborated with the Chinese government, which has funded the public hospital and the project is in progress.
Mugenda further added that the facility will have six hundred beds, as well as supplement their school of medicine and also work hand in hand with the public for quality health care.
“The hospital will have six hundred beds which will have a cancer center and also a spinal center which will cater for all cancer patients and patients with backbone problem,” said Mugenda.
She further said that there is only one children’s hospital and it is private, noting that they want to establish another public children’s hospital, which will also be referral to receive extreme cases from other hospitals.
“We only have one children hospital in Kenya so far (Gertrude hospital) and thus we will build one big children’s hospital with three hundred beds which will also be referral to get extreme cases from the other hospitals,” added the Professor.
She said that expertise and personnel will be outsourced from India and America, such that Kenyans will not have to go abroad for health care.
Mugenda further stated that the residents should be patient and give space to the university to develop, since it iis for the benefit of Kenyans and the best of the area residents.
