The State has been asked to allocate funds for relief food for flood-prone areas.

Kenya Primary School Head Teachers Association (KEPSHA) Nyando Sub-County chairman Ted Odero laments that schools used to get relief food during floods but that is no longer happening.

"Whenever there was a flood in Nyando, apart from the rescue measures that the government provided, we would get relief food," said Odero.

He added that teachers in Nyando do not have hardship allowance.

"Places like Muhoroni teachers have been allocated hardship allowances but here in Nyando we do not have. Teachers do not want to be Nyando Sub County because of the obvious reasons," he said.

Speaking at Multi-Purpose Hall yesterday, Odero said that there is under-staffing which has affected the performance of schools in Nyando.

He said that teachers and pupils cannot access schools due poor road network which are impassable during floods.

Kisumu County Executive for Education, Sport and Culture Jennifer Kere said that there is high drop-out rate of girls in schools.

"The bodaboda operators who carry schools girls on their motorcycle tend to disappear with them," said Kere.

She urged the operators to protect the girls in schools and report to the police their colleagues who disappear with school girls.
