The cooler, which is set to boost the productivity of milk in the area, will also reduce losses incurred by farmers while marketing their produce.

Speaking to farmers in Keringet on Tuesday, Agriculture livestock and fisheries Cabinet secretary Felix Koskei promised the farmers that the Sh9 million has been set aside for the purchase of the cooler and a refrigerator early next year.

“The machine will help farmers minimise wastage, reduce milk spoilage as well as boost the production of milk in the area,” said Koskei.

Despite being a rich agricultural area, he noted that many farmers who supply milk to Nakuru town incur a lot of loses during the rainy seasons when the roads are impassable.

“Impassable roads especially during the rainy season have for a long time inconvenienced farmers who record heavy loses,” noted Koskei.

He also urged the farmers to embrace dairy farming so as to meet the growing demand of milk in Nakuru town..

According to Hanna Maiwa, a dairy farmer, the coolers would help reduce milk spoilage, something she said is a major worry to the farmers.

“We can now embark on serious dairy farming unlike before because we are assured that our produce is safe from spoilage. Most of us usually get discouraged especially during the rainy seasons and cannot get our produce to the market. With the cooler, we are motivated to even work,” said Maiwa.
