A section of banana farmers in Keumbu area Kisii county are reaping big from their produce after adopting the latest banana farming technology.
According to some of the farmers who were interviewed they have been able to double up their produce since they adopted the new method that was introduced to them by Consultative Group International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
Peter Nyang’au a farmer in the area said that they adapted to tissue culture bananas (TCB) back in 2013 and from then they have been able to double up their income as the bananas mature fast are grow bigger.
“The new technology has helped the farmers from the area to rely on bananas as their main income as currently, they can sell one banana for as much as Sh1000 compared to the earlier year when they were harvesting small bananas and used to sell them at most Sh500,” he added.
Another farmer from the area Christine Nyantomeri said with the new variety they can harvest bananas from their farm after every two weeks as they mature so fast and have good intervals.
She added that most of the farmers in the area are now growing bananas at the expense of other staple foods such as maize.
