Farmers in Keumbu in Kisii County have been urged to embrace sugarcane growing using modern technology to enable them to earn income to boost their living standards.
Speaking when visiting the Stadium upgrading project in the area, Nyaribari Chache development committee chairperson Nelson Marube said that the area is rich in ingredients that favor sugarcane growth.
Marube added that there was a need for the farmers to ensure that they embrace the crop as the county government has invested more in agriculture to improve food production in the region to reduce food shortage and poverty experienced in the region.
He called upon farmers to ensure that they attend various farming seminars and open-day that will help them learn and exchange ideas on how to use the new methods of farming.
Marube claimed that farmers in the region have been relying on growing maize as their staple food forgetting that even sugarcane farming can help them generate income.
He termed high illiteracy levels in farming methods among the residents as the major factor contributing towards low yields because they lack skills on how to grow a variety of crops.
“We all have seen those few farmers from the area who have already planted sugarcane and they make a lot of money this is why I urge all farmers to ensure that they try it” he added.
