The Kenyan education sector is going to be under a different system come 2018. The government, through the Ministry of education will be introducing a raft of radical changes that include transiting to a new education model. On top of the list is the implementation of key Jubilee Party election pledge, free day secondary education.
The free secondary school education
The free secondary school education will mean all students who sat for the 2017 KCPE, will be admitted to secondary schools. With inadequate classrooms and teachers, the government will need to hire more teachers and construct more learning classrooms.
Textbooks supply directly from the government
Another radical shift is the decision by the ministry to supply textbooks directly to the schools. Each student joining form 1 will be expected to get a standardized textbook. However, this is becoming a dilemma for the ministry as schools will be opening soon, and yet books are yet to hit the shelves.
New system 2-6-3-3-3
The new education system is aligned to the country’s development blueprint, the Kenya Vision 2030. The new education will entail pre-primary, lower primary, upper primary, lower secondary and senior secondary. Each level of education will have different subjects taught. More so, they will be different durations for each level to fully cover the subjects allocated for that level.
