Moi University is the second oldest tertiary institution after the University of Nairobi but lately, it has been in the limelight for the wrong reasons.

This has been mainly because of high voltage local politics that have crept into the institution and massive misappropriation and embezzlement of the University resources.

The recent appointment of Prof. Isaac Kosgey as the new Vice-chancellor was met with frenzy excitement by both the university staff and locals.

A number of university staff have not been appraised for some time and some of them have even worked for the institution for more than a decade now on a contractual basis.

The students too have not been left in the university's undoings. There has been a lot of congestion in lecture rooms. The university too has not had the capacity to house its students due to inadequate hostels.

The new VC who is deemed to be a redemption is torn from fixing staff problems or starting with the students. To be frank, without students, Moi University is just a hall.

The students are the customers of the institution and in business, if you can't satisfy your customers you have no reason for being in business. It is therefore in order for the VC to work on student affairs first and finally come to the university staff.

It is also important to note that Moi University has been a mother to a number of prominent leaders in the country. It really defeats logic that the government has been pumping peanuts into the university.

However, the national government should substantially increase its spendings on the institution. With the current financial constraints facing the institution Prof. Kosgey will hardly make any tangible progress.
