Nigeria has committed to work with Kenya to ensure films distributed in the two countries comply with classification guidelines that are applicable in the respective regulatory jurisdictions.
The West African country has also sought partnership with the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) in creating awareness on content safety, to protect children from being exposed to harmful film content.Speaking when he paid KFCB a courtesy call, Nigeria National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) Executive Director Adedayo Thomas, said the Nigerian regulator will be pleased to work with KFCB to ensure that all Nigerian films distributed in Kenya, were classified by both agencies in line with the law."We encourage KFCB to seek clarification from NFVCB if they suspect any Nigerian film has not been classified," said Adedayo.He added that for a Nigerian film to be distributed in Kenya, it must be classified by both NFVCB and KFCB. Adedayo warned that dealers in unclassified Nigerian films in Kenya would be arrested and deported to Nigeria for prosecution in collaboration with KFCB.He also decried the rise in illegal translation of foreign films into local languages and expressed his agency’s interest in partnering with KFCB, to establish a continental content regulatory framework, for enhancement of capacity and research.
