Kenya Forest Service (KFS) officers in the North Rift region have been asked to intensify the crackdown on illegal forest loggers to save forest cover.
North Rift environmentalists led by John Chumo who is also the National Environmental Complaints Committee Secretary speaking in Eldoret on Monday said police officers are key to save forest cover.
Chumo urged the government to deploy more forest police officers to arrest people cutting trees and burning charcoal illegally.
"The government should implement a policy to increase forest cover in the country and deploy more police officers to guard forests,” he said.
He added that increased demand for land threatened the survival of forests.
“Several people are clearing trees and cultivating lands to grow crops. The government needs to put urgent measures to end the menace,” he stated.
Chumo urged locals in the North Rift region to be good ambassadors to save forests.
