For many years, residents at the Coast have decried overcrowding and erratic services at the Likoni Ferry.
The situation will however change after Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) unveiled plans to launch cable cars at the channel.
The cars will be introduced from March 2017, as the service provider seeks to improve service delivery at the channel in the coming years.
Upon its inception, passengers will part with Sh20 during the off peak hours and Sh50 during the peak hours of the day.
The cars will have a capacity of 11,000 passengers per hour to and fro the 500m channel.
The new innovation will reduce the time taken to travel across the channel from ten minutes to two minutes, as the cars seek to promote tourism in the region by offering a wide view of the Coastal city.
KFS Managing Director Bakari Gowa, said the cable cars will carry around 80,000 persons daily, which translates to 20 per cent of the ferry users at the channel.
He also said that the new cable cars will ease congestion in ferries, which has been a great challenge for years.
His sentiments were echoed by Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers (Kahc) Coast branch Executive officer Sam Ikwaye, who lauded the project.
"When this is actualised, then we can comfortably talk about value addition to destination Kwale and the larger South Coast at large," said Ikwaye, as quoted by The Standard.
