Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has asked for a review of the law on harambees, proposing a complete ban on funds drives.
Khalwale alleged that the money Kenyans receive from harambees is a portion of cash stolen from the public.
"When you come to a harambee and donate Sh1 million which you got after looting Sh10 million from the public, it simply means you are a thief," he said during NTV's AMLive show on Tuesday.
"If we don't fix the issue of harambees then we will not be able to fight corruption effectively," he added.
Khalwale's concern was also shared by Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo who said harambees should not be used as a campaign tool, and that the move by churches and other institutions demanding their leaders to participate in harambees only fans corruption.
He also said those who are using the harambees to campaign will soon run out of options.
"From December 8, harambees will be illegal and these people running around with millions to donate to churches will have nothing to campaign with," he said.
"People in leadership as low as MCAs get more that 50 invitations in a week to participate in harambees; where do you expect them to get that money?" Jakoyo asked.
