A primary school in Nakuru County will start offering greenhouse farming lessons to its students.
The programme being facilitated by the National Irrigation Board, will see pupils of Kiamaina Primary School in Bahati constituency take lessons in greenhouse farming starting this term.
Speaking at the school Tuesday when he presented a greenhouse to be used for the lessons, NIB western region coordinator Daniel Masakhwe said the lessons will equip students with greenhouse farming skills in their early years.
He said the lessons will be rolled out in all public schools once the trial initiative has been completed.
“We have selected a few schools across the country that will be offering greenhouse farming lessons as one way of equipping our young ones with practical modern farming skills,” said Masakhwe.
He added; “We want the future generation to move way from the traditional farming methods because the weather has also become unpredictable and the only option is to go the green house way.”
The lessons will be offered to students from Standard Six to Eight.
Mr Peter Karuga, the agriculture teacher who will be in charge of the greenhouse lessons said the lessons will help in equipping students with skills needed in enhancing the country’s food security situation.
