A man who allegedly broke into a neighbour’s house and stole money before falling asleep has been beaten to death by an angry mob in Kiambaa’s sub-county of Lari.
The middle-aged man is said to have broken into the house and stole Sh45,000 before mysteriously falling asleep in the same house.
John Kamweru broke into Joseph Kuria’s house on Sunday when the latter had gone to church.
Kuria said he returned from church to find the suspect dead asleep with money stuffed in his trouser pockets.
“I found him dead asleep on my bed with money stuffed in his pockets,” said Kuria.
He later alerted neighbours who came to witness the mysterious incident. The neighbours, however, beat the suspect to death after realising that he had stolen the money.
The owner of the house said he had sold a cow the previous day and that the deceased new about the deal.
Area police commander David Chemwetich confirmed the incident, saying an investigation has been launched. He warned residents against taking the law into their own hands and instead asked them to give police a chance to deal with criminals.
The police boss said that legal action will be taken against those implicated in the incident.
He asked residents to work with the police instead of lynching suspects, who could be innocent. Chemwetich added that 24-hour patrols will be initiated to deal with rising criminal activities.
