Former Kiambu women rep aspirant June Koinage has called on women in Kiambaa Sub County to seek leadership positions in different posts in the area.
Speaking to women at a mother’s union meeting yesterday at the ACK St James church in Kiambaa, Koinage said that women in the area have not managed to keep leadership positions due to the mentality that those positions are for men.
She added that it does not have to be political leadership for them to feel they are leaders. Being a leader according to her has more to do with influencing people’s lives positively and women are in a position to do that.
In her opinion women in Kiambaa Sub County have become content with being housewives and running small businesses leaving the men to take up leadership where the women are not properly represented. She said that women in this area should stand up and step out of this absurd tradition.
Koinage advised the women to take up leadership positions so that they can set a good example to their learned daughters with leadership skills. She added that most school going girls have no ambition to become leaders as there has not been enough women leaders to encourage them.
She said that women should take advantage of the need for good leadership in the sub county as most men have indulged in alcohol and is not compatible for leadership. The chairlady of the mother’s union group in the church, Charity Kirika said that the former aspirant in the county had done well to sensitize the women on leadership issues as most of the women in the area have it in their minds that only specific women can lead.
Kirika said that she has witnessed that whenever a group is being started in the area, women elect same leaders in charge of already existing groups. She also said that women leaders in Kiambu County should come together and encourage more women in the county to take up leadership for a change.
