Kiambu women representative Anne Nyokabi has accused the county government of failing to tame illicit brewing and alcohol abuse among teenagers.

Speaking at Ruiru town on Monday, the Women Rep said that the county’s efforts to curb illicit brewing are not enough.

Nyokabi noted that cases of illegal brewing are still rampant in most parts of Kiambu County.

She cited Limuru, Lari, Thika and Kikuyu where brewing remains a challenge.

“The county government and relevant authorities from the national government have completely failed in taming illicit brewing,” she said.

Nyokabi said that illicit brewing has destroyed many families and that those still brewing and selling the illegal brew should be arrested and taken to court.

The Women Rep said that she has been receiving complaints from county women regarding how alcohol and illegal brews have robbed them of their men and husbands.

“The issue of illicit brewing is a serious one and needs urgent solutions,” she said.

The Kiambu Women leader added that development will remain history in some parts of Kiambu if illegal alcohol is not stemmed out.

She said that men and young people spend most of their time in drinking dens and abandon their families and responsibilities.

Nyokabi said that as a women representative, she will not sit down and watch as an entire generation is being wiped out by alcoholism and drug abuse.

She appealed to the Kiambu government to change its tactics and confront illicit brewing head-on.

Nyokabi also asked the National Campaign against Drug Abuse (Nacada) to intervene and have makers and sellers of illicit brews arrested.
