Parents of children with hearing impairments in Ruiru sub county of Kiambu county have called on the county government to procure a testing device for their children.
Speaking in Ruiru town on Wednesday, the chairman of Ruiru Parents With Deaf Children Mr. Stephen Maingi said that most of the parents cannot afford to cater for the needs of their children.
Mr. Maingi said that most of their children are wrongly placed in schools due to the lack of audiometers to test their hearing levels.
“It is only after our children hearing levels are known that we can be able to place them in the right schools with other children whom they can freely and openly interact with,” Mr. Maingi said.
He said that most of the children have never adapted to the school environment a condition he blamed for lack of proper testing devices to determine the right environment for learning.
Maingi further added that the audiometer is expensive for the parents to purchase on their own considering that most of them are middle class farmers.
“The testing equipment is a bit expensive and without support from the county government in purchasing them, our children will continue to suffer,” Mr. Maingi said.
He has urged the county government to purchase diagnostic audiometers to keep the parents from taking their children to other counties such as Machakos and Nairobi for testing.
