Mong'are says that proliferation of children's homes and orphanages led to the audit to ensure that children's rights are upheld.

"Before we started to carry out this audit, we had a concrete report of child abuse and molestation in some of these homes and that is why we have taken the necessary steps to ensure that this stops," Mong'are said in Kiambu on Wednesday.

He said that it was painful to see young children being exploited by caregivers who have sought refuge in those homes.

"Our officers around the county have been working around the clock to ensure that these children's home operate within the law and safeguard children's rights," Mwambi added.

He said that home operators who will be caught to have violated children's rights will be dealt with including having their homes closed down.

Mong'are also noted that street families have started to re-emerge in various urban centres in the county attributing the problem to the county's proximity to Nairobi city.
