Kiambu County Governor Ferdinand Waititu has said that 1 million trees will be planted in the region by mid April.
Waititu speaking at Roromo area on Friday said the move is aimed at restoring forests and protect water resources.
"We support the ban on logging which the national government imposed. My administration has partnered with the national government to boost environmental conservation by planting more trees. The trees will be planted at homes, forests and public land,” said the governor.
Waititu asked Kenya Forest Service officers to arrest anyone found cutting trees without permission.
"Locals found cutting trees illegally in forests or private farms should be arrested and arraigned in court. The environment should be taken good care of by everyone,” he said.
He added that the county will distribute 5,000 drought resistant tree seedlings such as avocado to residents to plant.
"Farmers should step up efforts to conserve the environment and plant more trees which bring rains for agricultural activities,” he added.
