Kiambu District Hospital, in conjunction with doctors from Canada and Spain, has launched neurosurgery treatment for patients. Speaking in the hospital during the launch, Kiambu Deputy Governor Gerald Githinji said that the foreign doctors have volunteered to offer the services which are usually quite expensive. “This is voluntary work but we will continue to talk to these doctors about our plans and even reach out for more,” Githinji said. Doctor Peter Kamau Wanyoike from the hospital's neurosurgery section said that they have been offering good neurosurgery treatment and asked residents and Kenyans to visit the hospital instead of seeking treatment abroad. “From December up to now we have been able to treat over 17 patients who are now well and back to their normal lives,” he said. Martha Wambui, a mother to a 7-month old patient travelled from Sabasaba in Murang’a County to seek treatment at the hospital. “When I gave birth to this child seven months ago he had a problem and I took him to Kenyatta National Hospital where doctors told me, after an x-ray, that there is water and pressure in his forehead. I have come all this way to seek treatment,” she said. The treatment is expected to benefit many poor Kenyans who are unable to cater for the costly exercise.
